RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a Web feed format used to publish frequently
updated content such as blog entries, news headlines, and podcasts and contains
either a summary of content from a Web site or the full text.
RSS content can be read using software called an "RSS reader," "feed
reader" or an "aggregator." The user subscribes to a feed by
entering the feed's link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser
that initiates the subscription process. The reader checks the user's subscribed
feeds regularly for new content, downloading any updates that it finds."
[1]
RSS Aggregators (also called readers) will download and display RSS feeds for
you. Aggregators reduce the time and effort needed to regularly check websites
for updates, creating a unique information space or "personal newspaper."
Once subscribed to a feed, an aggregator is able to check for new content at
user-determined intervals and retrieve the update." [2]
The aggregator provides a consolidated view of the content in a single browser
display or desktop application. Aggregators with podcasting capabilities can
automatically download media files, such as MP3 recordings. In some cases, these
can be automatically loaded onto portable media players (like iPods) when they
are connected to the PC." [2]
